Hakata Machiya Folk Museum

Although Hakata may have undergone a drastic change over the years, the people’s hearts remain the same. The open and unconventional Hakata temperament has been passed down together with many festivals and traditions, making Hakata a hometown beloved by the people that live here. The life and culture of Hakata, mainly of the Meiji and Taisho eras, are introduced from various perspectives at this Museum.

The "Hakata Machiya" Furusato Museum consists of an exhibition building, a machiya building, and a souvenir shop, and is a facility that introduces life in Hakata from the Meiji to Taisho eras.The machiya building is a relocated and restored machiya building built in the early 20s of the Meiji era as a residence and weaving place for Hakata weaving, and is a designated cultural property of Fukuoka City.

History and culture of Hakata. The first floor is an exhibition on the history and culture of Hakata.

Traditional crafts of Hakata. On the second floor, you can see an exhibition of folk tools handed down to merchants and demonstrations of traditional crafts of Hakata.

Machiya building. The machiya building is a relocated and restored machiya building built in the early 20s of the Meiji era as a residence and weaving place for Hakata weaving, and is a designated cultural property of Fukuoka City.
