Saint Nakuto Lab

Na'akueto La'ab (also written Nakuto Lab) was the nephew of King Lalibela, that is to say the son of his brother Gebre Maryam, he reigned in Ethiopia at the beginning of the 13th century and died at the age of 70 years. He was one of the last rulers of the Zagwe dynasty.

According to certain hypotheses, he is the nephew and adopted son of Gebre Mesqel Lalibela and he would have reigned 48 years from 1212 to 1260. In her study Marie-Laure Deratle actually presents as the son of Harbai and the nephew of Lalibela.

Legend has it that he prayed lying on swords. Like King Lalibela, he built a cave church, the Church of Nakuto Lab, located 4 km from the town of Lalibela in a spectacular location, nestled in a cliff. The church's treasury still houses remarkably illuminated manuscripts, icons and beautiful silver crosses from the period.

According to tradition, Nakuto Lab is expected to return because, according to the belief, he will return one day to lead his people again. Inside, a number of stones pierced by the holy water that drips from the roof of the cave can be discovered. Pilgrims come here to drink this water, in the morning on an empty stomach, to be cured of their diseases.
