House of Emmanuel

Biete Amanuel (ቤተ አማኑኤል in Amharic, Beta Amanouël or Biet Emmanuel, "The House of Emmanuel") is an Ethiopian Orthodox church located in Lalibela, Amhara, Ethiopia.

It is the only monolithic church in the South East group and the second largest in Lalibela. 18.5 m long, 12.5 m wide, it is located at the bottom of a trench 29 m long, 11 m deep. Taken at the top of the roof, the height of the church is 12 m high.

It is very carefully carved on its three floors. Each floor has a different style of windows. The square frames and bosses of the doors and windows, the three-level plinth, the horizontal bands of the facade, are in the classic Aksumite style. Its plan is basilica with its triforium opening onto the attic, an elevated and vaulted central nave, sanctuary and dome. The top floor has nine rooms which symbolize the Nine Saints whose missionary activity made it possible to spread the Christian religion in the country in the fifth century.

The civil and regional wars at the end of the 20th century left numerous bullet holes in its walls.
