House of Abbot Libanos

Biete Abba Libanos ("The House of Abbot Libanos" or Abba Matâ'a) is an Ethiopian Orthodox church located in Lalibela, Amhara, Ethiopia.

Both monolithic and hypogeum type, it imitates a cave church, only the roof being attached to the rock. The four facades are well sculpted and reproduce beams, frames and bands. The length of the facade is 9.5 m, the width 7 m (8.4 m with the base) and the height of the building is 6.75 m taken in the axis of the door. Very degraded, the original rock had to be, in places, replaced by blocks of stone. The interior is of basilica plan.

The One Night Church - Tradition has it that Maskal-Kébra, wife of King Gebre Mesqel Lalibela, was unaware that ten underground churches were being excavated in the kingdom's capital. Intrigued by the king's mysterious activity, she followed him in secret to the building site. When she discovered the wonders being finished by the teams of sculptors, she asked her husband to have an eleventh sculpted dedicated to her. The order was immediately given and the next day the queen was able to admire House of Abbot Libanos (Biete Abba Libanos), erected thanks to the night work of a squad of angels.
