House of the Cross

Biete Meskel (or Beta Masqal or Maskal or Holy Cross) "The House of the Cross", is an Ethiopian Orthodox chapel located in Lalibela, Amhara, Ethiopia.

Semi-monolithic, elongated in shape, fitted out in the natural rampart of the House of Mary (Bieta Maryam) pit courtyard, its interior space is divided by four pillars. Many Greek crosses in relief decorate the interior and justify its name. Outside, the unique south-facing facade is adorned with ten pretty blind arcades in bas-relief which would symbolize the Ten Commandments. This face is 23 m long and 3.4 m high. The "treasure" includes a 12th century brass processional cross.
