Chao Anouvong Park, Vientiane

Chao Anouvong Park sits right on the Mekong riverbank in Chanthaboury district, Vientiane Capital.

Chao Anouvong Park was built as part of a multi-million US dollar Mekong riverside development project funded by the Republic of Korea’s government. The integrated project was designed to change the area stretching over 20 km along the Mekong River into a beautiful landscape for Vientiane residents.

Chao Anouvong, or regnal name Xaiya Setthathirath V (1767 – 1829), led the Lao rebellion (1826–28) against Siam as the last monarch of the Kingdom of Vientiane.

  • In 2010, to coincide with the 450th Anniversary celebrations of Vientiane, the Laos government created Chao Anouvong Park, complete with a large bronze statue of the locally revered ruler.
