St. Philip Nishizaka Church

Saint Philip Nishizaka Church is a catholic church, standing next to the Twenty-Six Martyrs Museum and Monument. Saint Philip was one of the Twenty-Six Martyrs.

Like the museum, the church was designed by Kenji Imai, an architect and a scholar who promoted Antoni Gaudi in Japan. So, the design of the church is obviously influenced by the style of Gaudi.

The church, along with the adjacent museum, was built in 1962. The Japanese architect Kenji Imai designed both buildings.

  • The church overlooks the spot where the 26 Martyrs of Japan were crucified.
  • Its patron saint is Saint Philip of Jesus, one of the 26 Martyrs and the first ever Mexican Christian martyr.
