Nagasaki Dutch Slope

Oranda-zaka, also known as the Dutch Slope or Hollander Slope, is a scenic sloping street in the Higashiyamate area of Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. Its name is derived from the numerous western, notably Dutch merchants that settled in the area in the second half of the 19th century.

Between the Edo period and the Meiji period, Europeans and Americans were commonly referred to as "Dutch", and after the opening of trade in Nagasaki, the Higashayama Ate area was designated as a settlement for foreigners, and a large number of Western-style buildings were built around itIt was eventually referred to simply as "Dutch Poe".
