Gubyaukgyi Temple, Nyaung-U, Bagan

This temple is commonly referred to as the Wetkyi-in Kubyauk-gyi to distinguish it from another temple of the same name in Myinkaba village to the southwest. It stands on the northeast side of Bagan just north of the main road leading from Nyaung-U to the ruins of old Bagan to the southwest.

This temple is of the four-faced type, in reference to the solid square core at its center surrounded by four Buddha images, each facing one of the four directions.

The temple roof is crowned with a sikhara in typical fashion, but the design is unusual: instead of the 'corncob'-like shape wherein the profile gently curves inward, the sides are completely straight, forming a pyramid.

The interior of the Kubyauk-gyi is filled with numerous mural paintings, including an excellent representation of "The Temptation of Mara" behind the east-facing Buddha, and 544 jataka tales along the side walls and ambulatory.

East facade, with partly ruined triple-pediment in the foreground.
