Jaisalmer Sunset Point

A lovely view of the sunset over the city and fort from a free viewpoint. It is quite hazy as expected in a dessert region, but still beautiful. You can see kids flying kites on their rooftops which make it very picturesque. It is popular with tourists as well as photographers, but no need to get there early for a spot.

There are performers performing traditional folk music as well as "Frere Jacques" which was a little weird, as well as children performing, they are also selling items and begging.

The reason why it's known as the Golden Fort or Sonar Quila only becomes apparent during dawn and at sunset.

  • During this golden hour, the waning Thar Desert sun cast its great rays upon the fort, lighting it up like a great flame in the desert expanse.

Khartal is an ancient instrument mainly used in devotional / folk songs. It has derived its name from Sanskrit words ‘kara’ meaning hand and ‘tala’ meaning clapping.

  • Usually made of wood or metal, a khartal player will hold one ‘male’ and ‘female’ khartal in each hand. The ‘male’ khartal is usually thicker and is held with the thumb while the ‘female’ khartal is usually thinner and is mainly balanced on the ring finger, which represents the fire element.
  • It is associated with the sun and the root chakra. Its force is associated with staying power, stamina, and the power to be assertive.

Sadhu giving his blessing.
Sadhu (sadhu (male) or sadhvīne (female)) is a religious ascetic, mendicant or any holy person in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism who has renounced the worldly life.

  • Sadhu means one who practises a 'sadhana' or keenly follows a path of spiritual discipline.
  • A sadhu's life is solely dedicated to achieving moksa (liberation from the cycle of death and rebirth), the fourth and final asrama (stage of life), through meditation and contemplation of Brahman.
