Gadisar Lake

Gadisar Lake also called Gadaria Lake is located in the Jaisalmer district of the Indian state of Rajasthan.

It was built by the founder of Jaisalmer, King Rawal Jaisal in 1156 AD and later rebuilt by Gadsi Singh around 1367 AD. This lake is an artificial lake. The lake is located about 1.5 km from Jaisalmer Fort. It is said that this lake once provided water to the entire city. Presently, the water comes in the Gadisar Lake from Indira Gandhi Canal, so it never dries.

Gadisar Lake is an artificial lake. It is located in the southern part of the city of Jaisalmer. This lake was built by the founder king of Jaisalmer Rawal Jaisal. Due to this, it was also called Jaisalasar Lake earlier. At that time it was the only water source of the Jaisalmer region. Later the lake was rebuilt by Gadsi Singh and after that it was renamed as Gadisar Lake. Presently, there are many tourists from abroad. The lake also has many chhatris and shrines of hindu Gods and goddesses.

Teelon Gate (Teelon ki Prol).
The gate is decorated with intricate carvings and sculptures and has an idol of Lord Vishnu on top of it.

  • It was built by Tilon, a courtesan of Jaisalmer, in the 14th century.

Dome-shaped pavilions (Chhatri).
These dome-shaped pavilions or cenotaphs were built in memory of the royal and noble families of Jaisalmer. The chhatris are located along the bank of the lake and have intricate carvings and paintings on them. Some of the most famous chhatris are Maharawal Moolraj II Ki Chhatri, Maharawal Jawahir Singh Ki Chhatri and Maharawal Lunakaran Ki Chhatri.

  • Chhatri are semi-open, elevated, dome-shaped pavilions used as an element in Indo-Islamic architecture and Indian architecture.
  • Originating as a canopy above tombs, they largely serve as decorative elements as opposed to functional elements.

  • The lake was considered sacred as it was believed to be blessed by Lord Shiva himself.

This is a small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located near the embankment of the lake.

  • The temple was built by Maharawal Akhai Singh in the 18th century and has a lingam or phallic symbol of Lord Shiva inside it.
