Hermitage of Our Lady of Lapa

A place full of history, combining landscape and Nature, over the border with Spain, constituting a belvedere where all you can see is Spain at about 500m (1640ft) of altitude.

A history-ridden place, which began 5000 years ago when the prehistoric man took shelter in the caves here and made engravings on the walls. From hermits to holy place for Christianity and a place with a magnificent landscape and that today still receives a pilgrimage and an annual festival.

Inside the hermitage and behind the altar is the cave that has the cave paintings. Access is through a small door under the altar. Beside the hermitage another small cavity houses a collection of belongings of those who used to live here and took care of the hermitage.

It is also said to have been an integral part of the Contraband Route, where the men who passed the merchandise across the border hid the merchandise so that the guards could not find it...

The annual party and its pilgrimage takes place on the last Sunday of September when the image of Our Lady of Lapa returns to visit his multi-millennial temple.
