Cathedral of Angra do Heroísmo
The Cathedral of Angra do Heroísmo, also known as the Sé Catedral, is the largest church in the Azores and a defining monument of Terceira’s historic center.

  • Its origins trace back to a mid-15th-century chapel founded by Álvaro Martins, later expanded into a grand 16th-century cathedral as Angra became an important Atlantic crossroads. Construction began in earnest around 1568–1570 under architect Luís Gonçalves Cotta, continuing for decades as the city grew in wealth and strategic relevance. The cathedral’s scale, Mannerist influences, and prominent position within the UNESCO-listed old town reflect its long-standing civic and religious importance.
  • Inside, the cathedral preserves a blend of historical layers, including later additions such as its 18th-century clock and various artistic and liturgical elements shaped by centuries of Azorean devotion. As the seat of the Diocese of Angra, established in 1534, it has played a central role in the spiritual life of all nine islands of the archipelago. Its resilience through fires, earthquakes, and restorations has made it not only a place of worship but also a symbol of continuity for the community.

Grota do Medo

Empire of the Holy Spirit of the Grotto of Fear
Holy Spirit Empires (Impérios do Espírito Santo) in the Azores are small devotional buildings that serve as the ceremonial and symbolic centers of the Cult of the Holy Spirit, a tradition deeply rooted in Azorean Catholic identity.

  • These practices, documented as early as the fourteenth century, involve weekly festivities from Easter to Pentecost or Trinity Sunday, depending on the island, and include processions, charitable food distributions, and the display of ritual objects such as the crown, banner, and staffs. They form one of the oldest and most distinctive religious traditions in Portugal, shaped by Franciscan influence and later supported by Queen Isabel, whose devotion helped spread the cult throughout the Portuguese world.
  • Within this broader tradition, the Empire of the Holy Spirit of the Grotto of Fear (Império do Espírito Santo da Grota do Medo) on Terceira Island represents a twentieth-century example located in the parish of Posto Santo. Founded in 1960, it follows the architectural and ritual patterns typical of Azorean impérios, serving as a local center for Holy Spirit celebrations and community gatherings. While the structure itself is modest, its placement in the rural area known as Grota do Medo ties it to the landscape and social fabric of the island, reflecting how even small localities maintain their own Holy Spirit traditions as part of the archipelago’s cultural identity.

Alteres

Pico Matias Simão
Pico Matias Simão is a volcanic cone on the northern coast of Terceira Island, in the parish of Altares, rising to 153 m above sea level.

  • It is part of the Serra de Santa Bárbara volcanic complex and was formed by Strombolian-type eruptions that produced spatter deposits, basaltic lava flows, and reddish lapilli layers. Marine erosion has carved away the entire northern flank of the cone, leaving a dramatic vertical cliff and exposing the internal structure of the volcano. At its summit stands the Cruzeiro monument, inaugurated in 1940 to commemorate the Restoration of Portuguese Independence.
  • Today, Pico Matias Simão is valued as both a geosite of the Azores Geopark and a scenic viewpoint overlooking the Atlantic and the rugged Altares coastline. The surrounding area shows clear evidence of cliff retreat and gravel deposits created by repeated collapses of the volcanic slopes. Although modest in height, the viewpoint is appreciated for its coastal panoramas and geological interest, making it a worthwhile stop for visitors exploring the northwestern part of Terceira.

Pico Matias Simão → Traditional Tile Factory
Driving route between Pico Matias Simão and Traditional Tile Factory.

Traditional Tile Factory
The Traditional Tile Factory in Altares (Fábrica de Telhas Tradicionais), located at Canada do Laranjo 7, is one of the last surviving artisanal brick- and tile-making operations in northern Terceira.

  • The village of Altares is documented as having an active traditional brickworks operated by craftsman Hirminio Cordeiro, who continues to produce several hundred handmade bricks per day following long-established methods. This aligns closely with the type of small-scale, heritage craft industry implied by the factory’s name.
  • Altares has a long association with traditional ceramics, and the region’s artisanal production reflects the broader history of Azorean tile- and brick-making, which gained importance from the nineteenth century onward. Locally produced tiles and bricks were used to line facades, chapels, and homes, often in cobalt-blue or geometric “tapete” (mat) patterns, and many artisans continue to work in classic or contemporary styles. A traditional tile factory in this area would therefore be part of a living craft lineage that preserves manual techniques, molds, and firing methods passed down through generations.

Serreta

Sanctuary of Our Lady of Miracles
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Miracles (Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Milagres), located in Serreta, Angra do Heroísmo, is one of Terceira’s most important pilgrimage sites.

  • Devotion began in the late 17th century, when priest Isidro Fagundes Machado built a small hermitage after seeking refuge in the area. Construction of the larger church started in 1819, led by General Francisco António de Araújo, and was completed in 1842. The building suffered significant damage during the 1980 Azores earthquake and was later rebuilt; today it stands 19 m tall, with a single nave and a notable 17th-century Indo-Portuguese ivory Christ inside.
  • The sanctuary is also known as the Parish Church of Serreta (Igreja Paroquial da Serreta) and follows the architectural style of late-19th-century Azorean churches, with a rectangular plan, high nave, and wooden or false-barrel vaulting. It remains an active pilgrimage destination, with devotees frequently walking to the site in fulfillment of promises or in thanksgiving, as reflected in visitor testimonies. The sanctuary continues to undergo conservation work, including a major restoration of its main altarpiece as of 2025, ensuring the preservation of one of Terceira’s most meaningful religious landmarks.

Vaquinha Cheese (Queijo Vaquinha), located at Canada do Pilar 5, 9700-321 Nossa Senhora do Pilar, Terceira, is the oldest cheese factory on the island, producing traditional Azorean cow’s-milk cheeses and artisanal yogurts.

  • Visitors can observe the production room through a glass wall—entry inside is restricted for hygiene reasons—and enjoy free tastings of all cheese varieties, according to traveler reports. The factory is consistently rated as the #1 shopping experience on Terceira, holding a Travellers’ Choice 2025 distinction for its high visitor satisfaction.
  • Vaquinha Cheese is known for its soft to semi-soft cured cheeses, including the traditional bar-shaped version made with pasteurized cow’s milk, rennet, cultures, and dry-salted rind, with about 45% fat content. The dairy also offers farm-based experiences where visitors can meet the “vacas felizes” (happy cows), learn about milking, and explore the full cheesemaking process from pasture to plate. With its combination of heritage production, rural atmosphere, and generous tastings, Vaquinha Cheese has become one of Terceira’s most beloved food destinations.

São Mateus da Calheta

Negrito Bathing Area
Negrito Bathing Area (Zona Balnear do Negrito) sits in the parish of São Mateus da Calheta on Terceira Island and forms a sheltered bay with a low coastline shaped mostly by large basalt slabs.

  • The seabed is generally flat, with the eastern side containing black volcanic sand and the western side featuring cold freshwater springs that emerge from the island’s basal aquifer. A small coastal fort built in 1581 stands beside the site, giving the area a notable historical character.
  • The bay offers calm, clear waters and natural lava-rock platforms used for sunbathing, along with a community pool that fills and empties with the tides. It includes more than 400 meters of solarium space and multiple access points to the sea by stairs or ramps, making it suitable for a wide range of swimmers, including young children thanks to one regularized-bottom pool. The area also reflects local maritime heritage, with displays related to Terceira’s whaling past found nearby.

Church of Saint Matthew of Calheta
The Church of Saint Matthew of Calheta (Igreja de São Mateus da Calheta), located in the parish of São Mateus da Calheta on Terceira Island, is a large Baroque-style parish church that serves as one of the most prominent rural temples in the Azores.

  • The current structure was built after the original church was destroyed by a hurricane in 1893, with the first stone laid in 1895 and the new building opening for worship in 1911. It features seven altars, two tall bell towers, and several important devotional images, including a 16th-century figure of Saint Matthew and a 17th-century Virgin Mary, both transferred from the earlier temple.
  • Its position in the center of the village, away from the sea, reflects a deliberate choice to protect the new church from coastal storms while ensuring easy access for the community. The building’s scale and visibility make it a landmark that can be seen from various points along the island’s southwest coast, including Monte Brasil and the Bay of Vila Maria. The church stands as both a spiritual center and a testament to the resilience of the local population, who rebuilt it through collective effort after the destruction of the old seaside structure.

  • It highlights the local shore-based whaling tradition, once active around the Negrito area, and includes boats, tools, and stories from former whalers who still live in the community.
  • Its setting beside the Porto de São Mateus reinforces the connection between the museum and the maritime culture of the parish, offering visitors a direct sense of how whaling shaped daily life on Terceira’s southwest coast. The museum operates with scheduled visits and maintains regular weekday and Saturday hours, serving as both a cultural archive and a reminder of the island’s long relationship with the sea.
