Church of Nossa Senhora da Boa Nova

The Chapel of Boa Nova, also known as the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Boa Nova, is located in the parish of Terena (São Pedro), municipality of Alandroal, district and archdiocese of Évora. It is a very old Marian sanctuary, believed to be the result of the Christianization of pagan cults, since in the vicinity of the town of Terena the ruins of the temple of the Endovelic god remain. The historical references to this sanctuary date back to the 13th century, since in the Cantigas de Santa Maria, by King Afonso X of Castile, there are some compositions dedicated to Santa Maria de Terena. The temple is a work of the 14th century, having the characteristic of being a rare Portuguese example of a church-fortress that has arrived practically intact today. The origin of the invocation Senhora da Boa Nova seems to be linked to the legend of Fermosíssima Maria (Dona Maria, Queen of Castile), the daughter of King D. Afonso IV of Portugal who went to the Portuguese court to ask her father

Endovelicus

Endovelicus (also Endouellicus , Endovélico in Portuguese, Endovéllico , Enobólico in Spanish), is the best known of the pre-Romans Lusitanian and Celtiberian gods of the Iron Age. He was originally a chthonic god of health, prophecy and the earth, associated with vegetation and the afterlife. Later accepted by the Romans themselves, who assimilated it to Asclepius or to Serapis and made him a relatively popular god. Endovelicus has a temple in São Miguel da Mota in Alentejo, Portugal, and there are numerous inscriptions and ex-votos dedicated to him in the Museu Etnológico de Lisboa (the Ethnological Museum of Lisbon); possible toponyms include Andévalo in Spain. The cult of Endovelicus prevailed until the 5th century, just when Christianity was spreading in the region. In the municipality of Alandroal, there is the Santuário da Rocha da Mina (Mina's Rock Sanctuary); some authors classify it as a temple of Endovelicus. It is the only known place of this kind in Southern Por

Rocha da Mina

On the top of a natural schist spur in Alentejo, Portugal was carved a beautiful ritual space. It is believed to be related to the pre-Roman god Endovellicus. There is a sanctuary and a small living area. This magnificent site is located in Outeiro de São Miguel da Mota, in Terena, in the municipality of Alandroal. It makes part of a local and popular pedestrian route and is worth a visit due to its magnificent and interesting location. Back in 1995 the site received the first archaeological surveys conducted by Manuel Calado, intervention which identified the residential character of the area, complementary to the specifically ritual area of the sanctuary. In 2011 and 2012 was again the subject of excavations, this time directed by archaeologist Rui Mataloto. In 2013, R. Mataloto and Maria da Conceição Vieira Roque made the last archaeological intervention in the site.
